Gainesville Police are investigating after remains were found in a vacant lot in the city.

Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said the adult remains were found in a lot near Dorsey Street on Jesse Jewell Parkway.

“Investigators were here following up on an investigation,” Holbrook said, when the officers discovered the remains around 2 p.m. Friday.

The body had been decomposed and will be sent for an autopsy.

Foul play has not been ruled out, Holbrook said. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the case.

Police used cutting tools to get into the heavily wooded area behind El Taco Veloz on Jesse Jewell Parkway. Gainesville Fire Division Chief Keith Smith led five officers in disposable coveralls and breathing apparatuses to approach the remains.

No further details were released by authorities.
