Hall County Tax Commissioner Darla Eden proposed Monday changing the due date for real and personal property tax to Nov. 15 from Dec. 1.
“The request stems somewhat from taxpayers’ requests over the years to move the date away from the holidays,” Eden told the Board of Commissioners, which alone has the authority to set the due date.
Eden said having the due date before Thanksgiving would eliminate the backlog in processing payments at the tax office. She said the office is closed four days during the year-end holidays.
“Most importantly also, we will be able to account and distribute money to the general fund more timely for budget projections,” Eden said.
Commissioners asked Eden to look at the possibility of giving taxpayers a grace period in which they would not be assessed a late fee for paying after the new Nov. 15 due date. She will report back at Thursday’s 6 p.m. board meeting at the Hall County Government Center, located at 2875 Browns Bridge Road in Gainesville.
