Police: Movie money being passed off as real money

Watch out for fake money. That’s the warning Gainesville Police are giving after seven area businesses have been given “movie money” passed off as real money in the past few weeks.

One of the businesses noticed it was counterfeit the second time someone tried to use it there and denied the customer service, Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said.

Gainesville Police said “FOR MOTION PICTURE USE ONLY” is clearly marked on both the front and back of the bills, which otherwise “look like real U.S. currency.”

“While used as props, the bills can also be purchased online as a novelty item,” Holbrook wrote in an email.

Added Holbrook: “Although a novelty item, anyone who tries to pass this money as real money will be prosecuted with felony charges.”

Gainesville Police are asking anyone with information on the use of this counterfeit money to call the department’s Criminal Investigations Division at 770-534-5254.
