What started as a traffic stop for not having a license plate ended with Gainesville Police officers discovering firearms, marijuana and $2,000 in cash, police said.

Officers tried to stop a pickup truck around 9:30 p.m. Monday, March 4 near Park Hill Drive and Lakeview Drive. Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish previously announced an increased patrol focus in the Park Hill Drive area following two shootings and an armed robbery during the first six weeks of the year.

The driver, Darius Cornelius Thurmond, allegedly kept driving to a Lakeview Circle residence.

“Once contact was made with the driver, it was determined that the driver was under the influence of alcohol,” Cpl. Jessica Van wrote in a news release.

Officers discovered 5 ounces of marijuana, $2,000 in cash, two shotguns and a rifle.

Thurmond was arrested and booked in to the Hall County Jail.

He was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, DUI less safe, failure to display license plate and attempting to elude an officer.
