The woman police had identified as a suspect in the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars from Carriage Nissan apparently killed herself Thursday as deputies attempted to deliver an arrest warrant.

Gainesville Police confirmed that they launched an investigation into a possible embezzlement by an employee of the Browns Bridge Road dealership on Jan. 18.

The suspect, Belen Rubio, 57, of Statham, was formerly listed on the Carriage Nissan website as the controller. The page was not available Monday.

“The initial case was in reference to a theft, possibly embezzlement, from the corporation involving an employee as the suspect,” Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said.

Investigators obtained warrants for felony theft by taking, Holbrook said.

“It looks like to the tune of a couple hundreds of thousands of dollars,” he said.

A representative from Carriage Nissan directed requests for comment to Darien Southerland, chief strategy officer at BG Ad Group.

Southerland said there would be an internal investigation but declined to comment Monday.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents and deputies from the Hall County and Barrow County sheriff’s offices attempted to serve warrants Thursday at Rubio’s home on Ga. 211 near Dooley Town Road.

“As the Hall County deputies knocked on the front door, they heard a loud bang and realized quickly the loud bang was a gun shot,” according to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

GBI Public Affairs Director Scott Dutton confirmed Rubio died as a result of her injuries, adding the preliminary findings are suicide.
