For half a century, very little of note occurred on the Gainesville sports scene that wasn’t described in detail by Phil Jackson. As longtime sports editor of The Times and radio broadcaster for Gainesville High sports, Jackson chronicled the history of this sports-rich area, from high school sports to The Masters golf tournament, and in doing so became a part of it himself. Jackson, 84, died Monday at home with his family after fighting cancer for a year and a half.
