Passenger killed after car strikes trees on Thompson Bridge

A Gainesville woman was killed Sunday after the car she was riding in went off Thompson Bridge Road and struck multiple trees, according to authorities. The driver of the car was charged in the crash.

Erika Marie Torres Rivera, 23, was fatally injured after a wreck around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, March 31.

Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Josh Hedden said Justin Colon, 20, of Gainesville, was driving a 2010 Mazda 3 northbound on Thompson Bridge Road near Fairmont Street.

“(Colon) was traveling too fast for the roadway conditions and lost control of the vehicle,” Hedden wrote in an email.

The car went off the road’s east shoulder and “struck multiple trees with its left side before overturning,” Hedden wrote.

“(The car) after overturning vaulted and struck a large tree with its undercarriage,” Hedden wrote.

Colon was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where he was treated for serious injuries. Hospital officials said Tuesday, April 2 that he had been discharged.

Colon was charged with DUI, first-degree vehicular homicide and failure to maintain lane. Other charges are pending.

Fellow passengers Kevin Lequerique Caban, 29, and Keishym Colon, 18, both of Gainesville, had minor injuries.

Hedden did not know the relationship of those in the vehicle. He did not respond to an email seeking an update Tuesday, April 2.
