A Gainesville man was sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison Wednesday for using a computer to attempt to entice a child for sexual purposes.

Kenneth C. Chase, 63, of 7030 Cedar Court, was convicted by a jury in U.S. District Court following a three-day trial in Atlanta in November, according to Patrick Crosby, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney of the Northern District of Georgia.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Thomas Thrash sentenced Chase to 15 years and eight months in prison followed by a lifetime of supervised release.

According to court testimony, an undercover FBI agent using an online chat room was approached online by Chase, who said he wanted to meet and have sex with an 11-year-old girl whom he believed to be the agent’s daughter.

Chase told an agent posing as a mother of the child that he would bring a sunshade and blanket to hide them while he engaged in sex with the girl in his truck in a parking lot. He also said he might give the child liquor.

Chase arranged to meet the agent at the Mall of Georgia, where he believed the ‘mother’ would bring the girl.

He was arrested outside the mall. The girl did not exist.

Inside the truck, agents found a blanket, sunshade and a bottle of butterscotch schnapps on ice.

According to court filings, Chase expressed nervousness about the meeting and wanted to make sure the person who he was communicating with was not law enforcement.

He asked her to send him pictures and was sent pictures of a mother with a daughter.

Many of the online conversations were conducted at Chase’s workplace, a custom motorcycle parts store in Dahlonega.

Chase was single and lived alone at the time of his arrest, according to court documents.
