Authorities have ID'd the victim of a fatal shooting Saturday as 26-year-old Nathaniel Gray, who was reportedly a resident at the home where the incident occurred.
Area law enforcement spent Sunday, Jan. 20, investigating the fatal shooting at a home at 1137 Desota St. SE in Gainesville.
Gainesville Police had much of Desota Street blocked off Sunday as authorities worked the scene, with the house cordoned off by yellow tape. A Hall County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit also was involved.
The shooting took place around 5 p.m. Saturday, and at 7 p.m. Gainesville Police Cpl. Jessica Van said a black male was pronounced dead on scene and “people of interest are in custody.” Gainesville police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook identified the man Monday afternoon as Gray.
“The public, they should not be alarmed at this time,” Van said. “Other than that, it’s an active and ongoing investigation.”
One man, who asked not to be identified, was standing in the rain at the top of a hill, looking down toward the scene. He said he has lived in the area for more than 70 years and has never seen law enforcement respond like it did Saturday.
At least 10 Gainesville Police cars were on scene as rain continued to fall.
Onlookers, being held back from the scene by yellow crime-scene tape, said they didn’t hear or see anything unusual until officers began racing by their homes.
Another man, who also asked not to be identified, said law enforcement drives through the neighborhood often, but knew something more was going on when he saw the number of cars pass by.
