A Jackson County School System special education bus carrying Kings Bridge Middle School students overturned shortly after 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Three children and two adults were aboard the bus at the time of the accident.
"We do not know the extent of the injuries, but we asked that all passengers be transported to Athens Regional Medical Center to be checked out just in case," Keith Everson, Jackson County School System assistant superintendent, said shortly after the wreck. "At least one mother rode with her child to the hospital in the ambulance, and I understand that the other families will be meeting their children at the hospital."
The Athens post of the Georgia State Patrol was investigating the accident Tuesday evening, and their report was not complete as of 9 p.m.
Although it rained off and on all day Tuesday, it was not known Tuesday night if the wet road conditions contributed to the accident.
According to Jackson County emergency staff, the bus overturned at 1529 Marlow Road and was the only vehicle involved in the wreck. County staff also reports that the passengers on the bus only received minor injuries.
The Associated Press reported that Jackson County EMS Director Steve Nichols said the bus rolled over and came to rest in the upright position.
According to Everson, those involved in the crash were the school system’s primary concern on Tuesday.
"We just want to be sure that the students are safe and that their families are with them," he said. "We’ll deal with the bus (later today)."
