A Gainesville apartment caught fire Wednesday evening while the resident was at church. No one in the 10-apartment building was hurt.

Gainesville firefighters responded to a call at about 7:45 p.m. that alerted them to a fire in a ground floor apartment at Park Crossing apartments at 1001 Park Hill Drive, Chief Jon Canada said. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire before it spread to other units, but the fire caused about $40,000 worth of damage, he said.

Canada said the fire was caused by a hot water heater that ignited nearby clothing. The woman living in the apartment returned home and opened her door to find smoke billowing out.

"We're fortunate that she did arrive home when she did so we could stop the spread of the fire," he said.

Canada said the woman is displaced but friends and family are assisting her.
