The quick actions of neighbors helped Gainesville police arrest a robbery suspect.

Neighbors responded when Howard Mahaffey, 78, yelled for help as two men attempted to rob him around 9 p.m. Thursday at his apartment, according to Lt. Brian Kelly of the Gainesville Police.

Neighbors were able to detain one of the suspects, Terry Bernard Randolph, until police arrived, Kelly said. The other suspect, identified as Danny Pye, fled but was later arrested at his Hazel Street residence.

Mahaffey had opened his door to two men asking for cigarettes. When he turned around, the men entered the apartment and one man restrained Mahaffey while the other took money from his pockets, Kelly said.

Randolph, 42, and Pye, 49, both of Gainesville, have been charged with robbery and burglary.

Mahaffey was not injured in the robbery attempt.
