The Mayfield Dairy in Braselton will hold its last tour Oct. 14 and will be closing the ice cream parlor and gift shop Oct. 31.

According to Visitor Center Coordinator Dawn Thompson, the visitor center will be closing for the season. No date was given to when or if the center might reopen or when tours might resume. Tours booked after Oct. 14 reportedly have been canceled.

Braselton officials are "saddened and shocked by the news," according to a news release from City Manager Jennifer Dees.

"Their presence in Braselton has become part of our identity, and we have always embraced the visitors, young and old, who made Mayfield and Braselton a stop on their travels," Dees said in the release.

"We are going to do our best to keep it open if it is at all possible."

The plant itself will remain open, as will the plant in Athens, Tenn. Tours, the tasting parlor and gift shop will remain open at the Tennessee location.

Regular tours will continue through Oct. 14, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
