Gainesville firefighters work Monday morning on a blaze on Lee Street off Rainey Street near the high school.

One man was burned as he escaped a fire at a home on Lee Street this morning, Gainesville Fire spokesman Keith Smith said. The man was at home along with eight to 10 others in the two-story house near Gainesville High School that serves as two apartments.

The victim sustained second and third degree burns and was taken to the hospital.

Leslie Camacho, the owner’s daughter, said she had heard from her father about 7 a.m. that the house might be on fire, so she tried calling the tenants but got no answer. A short time later, she heard from the tenants confirming the fire, and she and her mother went to the scene.

She said she didn’t know the fire’s cause.

Red Cross is assisting the residents, and the Gainesville Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the blaze.

The structure is a total loss, Smith said.
