A Gainesville man is accused of eluding law enforcement from Gainesville and Hall County after allegedly stealing a car earlier this week.

Joshua Tolbert, 26, was booked Wednesday into the Hall County Jail on more than a dozen charges related to allegedly fleeing from police.

Hall County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched Monday to the 5200 block of Young Road, where Tolbert was accused of stealing a Toyota Rav4 SUV that belonged to his grandmother.

“After a lookout on the stolen vehicle’s description was given out to local officers, a Gainesville city officer encountered the vehicle driving (recklessly) on Green Street,” Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Deputy Nicole Bailes said.

The driver failed to yield, leading to an attempted traffic stop by a Gainesville police officer, Bailes said.

“Hall County deputies spotted the vehicle a short time following in the area of Ga. 60 north and attempted to stop the vehicle again,” Bailes said. “The driver fled from deputies and ultimately lost control of the vehicle.”

The car overturned around the 4500 block of Thompson Bridge Road after striking a fence, Bailes said.

Tolbert was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for injuries “to his head and a broken hand during the crash,” Bailes said.

Georgia State Patrol charged Tolbert with driving on the left of the center lane, leaving the scene of an accident, driving with a suspended license, failing to maintain lane and driving under the influence of drugs.

Gainesville Police charged Tolbert with fleeing and eluding, driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving, passing on a hill, misuse of center turn lane, driving with a suspended license, failure to maintain lane, running a red light and speeding.

The Sheriff’s Office charged Tolbert with theft by taking, robbery by intimidation, driving under the influence of drugs, fleeing and eluding and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Tolbert remained in the Hall County Jail on Thursday.
