A Gainesville man was arrested Monday night and charged with shooting another man in the Lakewood Baptist Church parking lot, Gainesville Police said.

Roy Mitchell Peck, 54, faces a charge of aggravated assault. He is accused of shooting John Henry Rogers, 42, of Marietta in the abdomen Friday.

Gainesville Police Cpl. Jessica Van was not sure of Rogers’ condition at this time.

There was no information for Rogers at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, according to hospital officials.

According to the Gainesville Police report, Peck has a residence in the Edgewater on Lanier apartments behind the church.

One of Peck’s neighbors is listed as the reporting party in the report.

Gainesville Police Sgt. Joe Britte previously told The Times that Peck and Rogers were not associated with the church in any way.

Van was not sure who owned the gun involved or what potentially led to the incident.

Police responded to the church’s back parking lot on Thompson Bridge Road before 3 p.m. Friday.

A witness said he saw the two men wrestling on the ground before hearing a single gunshot.

Peck was booked into the Hall County Jail, where he remains.
