Man charged in shooting that injured woman at Flowery Branch home
Filiberto Aguirre-Gomez

A Flowery Branch man is being held without bond after a Monday night shooting following a dispute at his home.

Filiberto Aguirre-Gomez, 44, is charged with aggravated assault in the incident in the 5900 block of Bailey Street, near Atlanta Highway, Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Nicole Bailes said.

Aguirre-Gomez is accused of shooting Tonya Sanford, who was at his home with her boyfriend to help Aguirre-Gomez’s estranged girlfriend move out of the home, Bailes said.

At some point during the packing, Aguirre-Gomez got into an argument that turned physical with Sanford’s boyfriend, according to Bailes. Once the two separated, Sanford, her boyfriend and the estranged girlfriend left the house.

Aguirre-Gomez got a gun inside his house and, according to witnesses, began firing several rounds, striking Sanford once in the shoulder, Bailes said.

Sanford was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville where she was held overnight for observation.

Deputies, arriving at the house just after 11 p.m., arrested Aguirre-Gomez.

The incident is still under investigation and further charges are pending, Bailes said.

Aguirre-Gomez was denied bond at his first appearance hearing Tuesday.

He has requested a preliminary hearing, which has been set for Jan. 15 in Hall County Magistrate Court, Bailes said.
