Lula City Councilwoman Vicky Chambers, as of Sunday night, is still in the intensive care unit at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Chambers was taken to NGMC following an accident on Joe Chandler Road on Jan. 10 after she was hit head-on by Joshua Armour, 23, of Gainesville. Armour’s Honda Accord struck the front end of Chambers’ Toyota Sienna around 7 p.m. that day.
“The Accord crossed over the centerline and struck the Sienna head-on,” wrote Department of Public Safety information officer Franka Young in an email.
Armour has been charged with driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane and failure to use safety belt, Young wrote.
Last week, Lula City Councilman Mordecai Wilson was asked to fill in for the absent Chambers at a city finance committee meeting. The entire Lula City Council took a moment of prayer for Chambers last Tuesday at the beginning of its work session.
“As far as I know, Vicky Chambers is doing OK recovering. I don’t know how long she’s going to be there, I haven’t been able to talk to her directly,” Wilson said Sunday. “The latest I’ve heard was that yesterday or the day before that she had an operation on her hip.”
Lula City Councilman Larry Shuler also confirmed the latest surgery Chambers had on her hip, but had not spoken to her directly since Friday morning.
“I’m sorry that it happened,” Shuler said. “That’s one of those things that you never know when it’s going to happen. I hope she gets along fine.”
The next scheduled meeting for the council is Tuesday night, but both councilmen had no comment on what the council’s plans were in the event of an extended absence by Chambers.
“I don’t know what’s on the docket until Tuesday morning when my tablet is filled,” Shuler said.
“Well, I’m going to cover whatever they want me to cover concerning her while she’s out,” Wilson said. “On the 28th we’re going to sit down and discuss the growth of Lula, but other than that I don’t know anything.”
