The Hall County Sheriff’s Office have identified the woman found dead in Lake Lanier on Friday as Michelle Dianne Baxter, 32, of Gainesville.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Stephen Wilbanks said the victim was found face down in the lake by fishermen just after 8 a.m. on the northern end of Lanier near the Chattahoochee River arm near newly opened Don Carter State Park.

The victim was removed from the lake by members of the Hall County Dive Team and transported to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s office for autopsy. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Wilbanks said witnesses reported seeing a woman of the same description swimming in the same area late Thursday evening. He said she lived in a home near the location where the body was found.

Wilbanks said there were no signs of trauma on the body. Though foul play is not suspected, the case remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigations unit.
