Is your water tasting strange? Gainesville water department has the answer

If your water has been tasting or smelling a bit off recently, the Gainesville Department of Water Resources said this may be because of “lake turnover.”

South Hall water customers have been reporting an “earthy” taste and odor, according to the water department.

“This is an aesthetic issue and not a health issue. We test the water at every step of the treatment process, and all of the results indicate that the water is safe to drink and for all other uses,” the water department wrote on Facebook.

The water department explained that Lake Lanier can experience lake turnover during times of air temperature change, causing the surface waters and deeper waters to mix.

In response, the water department said they will be performing more filter washes and “optimizing our chemical treatment processes” at the Lakeside water treatment plant.
