Area school systems, except for Gainesville, are closed again today as a weekend of frigid weather did little to thaw less-traveled roads.
Superintendents made the decision Sunday night after examining roads hit especially hard by Thursday’s snow and ice followed by bone-chilling temperatures.
Hall County has 30 secondary roads mainly in the north and east that aren’t passable for buses, Superintendent Will Schofield said.
“That made (the decision to close) pretty simple,” he said.
In an e-mail announcing the closing, he said he apologized “in advance for the inconvenience, but we will continue to make these decisions with safety being our primary factor.”
The Hall County Board of Education’s regular meeting will occur as scheduled at 5 p.m. today.
In Gainesville, Superintendent Merrianne Dyer said the parents’ drop-off area at Enota Multiple Intelligences Academy will be redirected to the front of the school.
Employees at Enota are advised to park in the front parking area or the streets next to the school. The rear parking and driveway will be closed.
Gainesville Middle School buses will use the Jesse Jewell Parkway entrance only today.
Motorists on Jesse Jewell and Enota Avenue are advised that there may be delays in the area from 7:30-9 a.m. and may want to take alternate routes, Dyer said in an e-mail announcing the school’s plans.
Both systems closed schools Friday after snow blanketed much of the area overnight. Road crews with local governments and the Georgia Department of Transportation were out in force putting down salt and gravel.
“We have some roads that continue to be covered in snow and ice. I expect by 1 o’clock (today) it’ll all be over,” Schofield said.
Temperatures are expected to climb to 40 degrees today, with mostly sunny skies also in the outlook, according to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.
Tuesday’s high is 39, with the mercury set to rise to the 50s Wednesday through Friday.
The next bout of precipitation is expected to be in the form of rain, which is forecast for Friday through Sunday. High temperatures Saturday and Sunday are expected to hover in the 40s.
