Last week’s icy weather directly contributed to the death of two people in Dahlonega, officials said Thursday.
Scotty Beck, 33, and 18-year-old passenger Anna Duncan were killed when Beck’s Chevrolet S-10 slid out of control on an icy Oak Grove Road last Friday night, officials with the Georgia State Patrol’s Cumming post said.
Beck’s truck was traveling too fast for conditions about 5 p.m. Friday when it hit a patch of ice and slid sideways into the path of a Ford Ranger near the Siloam Church Road intersection, the patrol said.
Beck’s truck was struck in the passenger side before running off the road and down a 5-foot embankment.
Neither Beck nor Duncan were wearing seat belts, the patrol said.
Lumpkin County Deputy Coroner Ronald Fortner said Beck and Duncan died as a result of blunt force trauma when their heads struck the dashboard of the truck.
Duncan died at the scene while Beck died after being airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center.
The driver of the Ford Ranger, 17-year-old Coby Whitehead, and two passengers in his truck were not seriously injured.
