Blacksmith Dean Smith hammers at an iron S-hook last weekend at the Northeast Georgia History Center. “My grandfather was a blacksmith for the railroad,” Smith said. “His dad was the town blacksmith in Baldwin, Ga. It’s amazing how it comes to me for some reason.” Smith has been demonstrating as a blacksmith for “about 30 years,” he said. “But I used to get in trouble using my grandfather’s anvil when I was a boy.” - photo by NAT GURLEY
The Northeast Georgia History Center’s mission has been preserving the past and sharing those stories with all generations. Thursday night, its star exhibit was itself. The center at Brenau University in Gainesville held a 10th anniversary reception for members featuring music, food (including a cake in the shape of the museum) and — in good museum fashion — tours.
