A drainage pipe failed on Ga. 75 between Cleveland and Helen. The roadway is shut down as repairs are completed.

Ga. 75 between Cleveland and Helen has reopened.

The White County road was closed Monday and most of Tuesday between Hulsey Road and Duncan Bridge Road/Ga. 384 after a drainage pipe failed underneath the highway, according to a news release from the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Workers had to remove damaged roadway, replace the drainage pipe and pave. Paving work began Tuesday at about 2 p.m.

“We’ve had our maintenance forces working non-stop to repair this damage as it is a well-traveled route in Northeast Georgia,” said Brent Cook, district engineer out of the Gainesville office.

Drivers were being detoured onto Asbestos Road until the repairs were completed, according to the DOT.

Drivers will notice the new portion of asphalt over the drainage pipe will be a more coarse material until a resurfacing project is completed.

A five-mile section north of Asbestos Road is scheduled to be resurfaced April 30.
