Hall County firefighters responded to a camper fire at 2932 Pierce Road Monday at about 8:30 p.m.

The property is owned by Dennis Pierce, but the camper, which sat on the back of the property, was occupied by Roy Fortner.

At some point Monday evening, a neighbor, Hubert Byrd, noticed the fire and went to investigate, said Hall County Fire Marshal Scott Cagle.

"He entered the camper and saw Mr. Fortner asleep ... and Mr. Byrd carried Mr. Fortner out and 911 was called," he said.

By the time firefighters arrived on scene, the camper was completely destroyed, Cagle said. "The only thing left right now is the axle."

Cagle estimated that it took only a couple of minutes for the camper, which was approximately 16 by 8, to burn.

The fire is believed to be accidental, Cage said, though investigators are still attempting to determine its cause.

Fortner was transferred to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with first- and second-degree burns, but is in stable condition, Cagle said. "Due to the size of the structure and Mr. Fortner being asleep, there is no doubt in my mind that Mr. Byrd saved his life."
