A man accused of killing his half-brother with a tree limb was indicted by a Hall County grand jury this week.

William Richard Gable, 26, faces charges of murder and aggravated assault in the May 2 death of Steven Paul Brookshire, who died at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta a day after he was airlifted from his North Hall home with severe head injuries.

Authorities initially said Brookshire, 36, was hit in the head with a stick. The indictment said the fatal injury was caused when the victim was struck on the neck with a tree limb. Murder warrants said Brookshire sustained fractured vertebrae and bleeding on the brain in the assault.

Hall County sheriff’s officials said the two men, who have the same mother, were quarreling prior to the fight, which occurred outside a trailer at 4426 Ledan Extension.

Responding officers found Brookshire lying unconscious in a side yard.

Gable initially was taken in for questioning and arrested on charges of aggravated battery under the family violence act. He was charged with murder the next day after Brookshire died.

Gable remains in the Hall County Jail without bond.
