A Clarkesville couple died in a house fire early Friday morning, authorities said.

The bodies of Perry Taylor, 59, and his wife Mary Elizabeth Taylor, 52, were found by specially-trained dogs Friday morning after Habersham County firefighters extinguished the blaze at 559 Chitwood Road, said Glenn Allen, a spokesman for state Fire Marshal John Oxendine.

"At this time it does not appear to be suspicious," Allen said, adding that an autopsy would determine the exact cause of death of the couple, whose bodies were badly burned.

A neighbor called in the fire about 5 a.m., Allen said.

The house, which did not have working smoke detectors, was destroyed.

Perry and Mary Elizabeth Taylor were the only occupants of the house, Allen said.

The state fire marshal’s office continues to investigate the cause of the fire.
