Update, Jan. 29: Water service has been restored as of 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Gainesville's public relations manager, Christina Santee.
Previous story: Some Gainesville water customers will experience a service interruption Wednesday, Jan. 29, to allow for water main improvements.
Work will begin at about 9 a.m. Wednesday and will cause a water outage that could last until 4 p.m. but may be shorter, according to Joel Altherr, a project manager with Gainesville Water Resources.
Gainesville Water Resources announced the outage on Tuesday.
Construction work will take place in the area of the Longstreet Bridge, which the Georgia Department of Transportation has rebuilt, and will affect many streets. The new bridge opened to traffic Tuesday, Jan. 28, and the old bridge will soon be demolished.
New water mains have been installed, and the existing lines will be abandoned, Altherr said. The existing lines are attached to the old bridge and must be abandoned to allow for bridge demolition.
Drivers are encouraged to be careful and watch for construction workers and equipment in the area on Wednesday.
