Gov. Deal receives Quilt of Valor in honor of military service

Gov. Nathan Deal received a Quilt of Valor from On Eagle Wings Quilts of Valor group of Gainesville in honor of his service in the Army. He was nominated by the Rock Creek Vietnam Veterans Group of Gainesville.

Quilts of Valor is a nationwide nonprofit made up of volunteers who sew comfort quilts for active-duty military personnel and veterans as a way to thank them for their service to the U.S.

To nominate a service member, go to to request a quilt.

Betty Heathman is the local group leader and started the group in January 2014. The group, which meets the second Thursday of each month, will this month award its 600th quilt.

The national group has awarded more than 181,000 quilts since it was started in 2003 by Katherine Roberts.
