Gainesville City Council on Tuesday approved contributing $200,000 to build a bridge along Tumbling Creek Road that would span railroad tracks.

The city joins Hall County government, whose share is $400,000, in funding the project.

The state Department of Transportation, at the request of Norfolk Southern Railway, closed the crossing in 2014, though Hall County fought the closing in the months following.

Tumbling Creek was considered a cut-through from Oakwood to Gainesville.

County government has submitted an application to the DOT for additional funding for the $3.5 million to $4 million project.
