A Lithia Springs man was charged with rape by the Gainesville Police Department, having allegedly sexually assaulted a woman when meeting through a trading website.

Lonzo Shafer III, 35, faces charges of rape and aggravated sodomy.

Police responded on May 19 to a Gainesville apartment and met with the victim of an alleged sexual assault. No information was available on the victim’s age.

“During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that the victim had met the perpetrator later identified as Lonzo Shafer III through an unspecified e-commerce and trading website,” said Gainesville Police spokesman Cpl. Kevin Holbrook.

Shafer was arrested Wednesday and was taken to the Hall County Jail. No information was available on the transactions or the website involved in the case.

“We encourage individuals to utilize indoor, public places if they’re meeting individuals to conduct this type of business,” Holbrook said. “You don’t necessarily know who you’re going to meet.”
