Gainesville Middle School students were evacuated to First Baptist Church on Green Street on Thursday morning after a bomb threat was found written on a bathroom wall at the school, school officials said.
“It has been confirmed that the entire building is clear and safe,” said Sarah Bell, chief academic officer for the school system, in an email after 5 p.m. Thursday. “No credible threat was discovered. However, our goal is to always take precautions in order to ensure the safety of our Red Elephant family.”
Students were available for early pickup from First Baptist Church, and those who stayed until the end of the day went home by bus or with their rides from First Baptist at 3:25 p.m.
Gainesville Police conducted a sweep of the school.
Bell said almost 2,000 people were evacuated, and all students made it home safely.
“The Gainesville City School System takes reports of potential harm directed toward our students very seriously,” Bell added. “And those responsible for creating disruptions to our schools will be held accountable for their actions.”
Bell said students will return to the Gainesville Middle campus as normal on Friday.
The bomb threat came a day after a similar threat at North Hall Middle School led to all students being evacuated into the North Hall High football stadium Wednesday. A North Hall Middle student was taken into custody Wednesday.
