A Gainesville man drowned Friday at Clearwater Beach, Fla., the Tampa Bay Times has reported.

Ryan Terry, 20, was swimming about 30 yards from shore when he went under. Donald L. Duncan, 41, also of Gainesville was swimming with him. An officer patrolling the beach was alerted and rushed to help, eventually pulling Duncan from the water.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Clearwater Fire and Rescue and police all searched for Terry. When rescuers found him, they performed CPR but eventually pronounced him dead, officials said.

Duncan was taken to Morton Plant Hospital, officials said. His condition was unknown.

The family was staying in a hotel in Orlando and traveled to Clearwater for the day, the paper reported.

A police spokesman said a strong current and the choppy water may have contributed to the incident.
