Gainesville Police Department’s Cpl. Drew Reed and Officer Steven Folkers each received the department’s Valor Award for their actions at a residential fire on Nov. 9.

“You’ll all recall ... there was a burning house (on Banks Street) with a child in it,” Chief Brian Kelly said. “These were the two officers that were able to respond and saved that child from further injury.”

Reed and Folkers each received a medal, certificate and plaque commemorating their receiving the department’s highest honor.

Salaries are in place for Gainesville City Council and the newly elected mayor Danny Dunagan.

The five council members will each receive $400 a month or $4,800 annually; the mayor gets $500 a month, or $6,000 a year. It’s no change from previous amounts, but with the mayoral position now a separately elected role, there’s an extra council member salary annually.

“All we did here was what the rotating mayor got, we just applied that to the newly elected position,” City Manager Kip Padgett said.

“(The salaries) come out of the general fund,” he added. “We budgeted for (the additional salary) when we did the budget this year.”

This was the first year city voters could directly elect a mayor; previously, the mayor’s job rotated between sitting council members every two years. A 2009 voter referendum set up the at-large mayoral post and added an additional person to the council.

Previous mayor Dunagan was voted into the mayoral position during the November election. Sam Couvillon is the new Ward 1 representative.

Supplements include an additional $125 per attended meeting for the mayor and each council member, not to exceed 10 meetings per month. A meeting is defined in the ordinance as any scheduled, special or called meeting, or a “meeting officially representing the city council.”

There are typically two meetings per month; for six people, that comes to $18,000 annually for the city.

Council members also receive an expense allowance of $75 per month, or $900 annually; the mayor gets $100 a month, or $1,200 a year.

The ordinance was approved unanimously at the Tuesday meeting of the council.
