The widening of Friendship Road/Ga. 347 in South Hall County was supposed to wrap up today, but weather is putting off the expected completion to June.
“Based on the unusually wet year that delayed work and that asphalt is temperature sensitive — it needs to be warm, about 50 degrees, to pave — the completion date had been renegotiated with the contractor,” Georgia Department of Transportation district spokeswoman Teri Pope said Monday.
The revised completion date is June 30, she said.
The $38.4 million project calls for Friendship Road to be widened to four and six lanes from Interstate 985 to Old Winder Highway/Ga. 211 — an 8-mile stretch.
Ga. 347 between Ga. 211 and Spout Springs Road opened in June, shortly after the 100-bed Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton opened its doors off Ga. 347. Other medical offices are now springing up around Ga. 347 and Ga. 211.
Pope said work left to do includes construction of sidewalks, curbs and gutter; building up and paving eastbound lanes; and new striping and signs.
The road builder is E.R. Snell Contracting Inc. of Snellville.
Other plans are underway to widen Ga. 347 between McEver Road and Lanier Islands resort. The DOT finished widening Ga. 347 between McEver Road and I-985 in late 2014.
With the completion of all the segments, Hall County will have one of its longest east-west connectors, running from Lanier Islands in Buford to Ga. 211 in Braselton. Ga. 211 then leads to Chateau Elan and Interstate 85.
