A Flowery Branch man is accused of possessing several checks stolen from mailboxes in South Hall, according to police.
Charles Quentin Malin, 38, was charged with one count of identity theft by Oakwood Police.
He was booked Friday in to the Hall County Jail, where he remains.
Sgt. Danny Sridej said the investigation started at the Oakwood Wal-Mart on March 27, when Malin was accused of using a stolen check from a victim in Gainesville.
“The suspect then altered the stolen check and used a counterfeit ID to obtain merchandise from Wal-Mart in Oakwood on (March 27),” Sridej said. “The same suspect had committed (a) similar act at the store located in Commerce.”
Hall County Sheriff’s Office investigators started working in collaboration with Oakwood Police after tips from social media.
“The suspect was arrested by Oakwood investigators and Hall County investigators who found that the suspect was in possession of several stolen checks that were stolen from mailboxes in the south area of Hall County,” Sridej said.
Additional charges are forthcoming, Sridej said.
Residents in Hall County who may have had mail or checks stolen between February and April are asked to call law enforcement. Sridej also recommended residents take mail to the post office or a dropbox to prevent theft.
