Hall County firefighters put out a boat fire Tuesday at Aqualand Marina that destroyed the craft and also damaged a dock and an adjacent boat.

Capt. Scott Cagle, Hall County fire marshal, said in a news release the call came in at 11:52 a.m. from the marina at 6800 Lights Ferry Road on Lake Lanier in South Hall. Fire crews arrived to find a 1973 36-foot Cabin Cruzer with heavy smoke showing. Firefighters stretched hand-lines onto the C-dock to fight the fire.

The fire consumed the boat, which was a total loss and valued at $6,000. The fire also damaged the dock and did about 75 percent damage to a nearby boat, Cagle said.

Investigators discovered the boat was being operated by the owner, and when he had redocked it, the owner and another occupant smelled smoke and heard a noise beneath them from within the boat. They were able to get off the boat safely.

Fire investigators will be working with the Army Corps of Engineers to investigate.

“These fires are always tough to fight,” Cagle said. “We are glad this was not a very windy day.”
