A Gainesville financial firm is holding an informational seminar Tuesday for senior citizens and safeguarding against identity theft.

Moore’s Wealth Management is hosting the free event beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Brenau Downtown Center, 301 Main St. SW, Gainesville.

“This is something that we felt really close to our heart to help seniors,” Moore’s Wealth Management office manager Deborah Alvarez said.

Alvarez said the firm has been working with the Gainesville Police Department for the presentation, which is expected to last 90 minutes or so. Following the presentation, the seminar will open up for a question-and-answer segment.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ 2014 analysis, roughly 7 percent of people ages 16 or older were identity theft victims.

There were 2.6 million elderly identity theft victims in 2014, up from 2.1 million victims in 2012.

Alvarez said attendees will receive contact information and other items to be prepared for potential identity theft scams and how to resolve issues if affected.

“Another part of it is the cyber part, encrypting data, being wise about using Wi-Fi,” Alvarez said.
