Federal subsidy aims to open up Internet to more families
Program would help poor connect online, but some worry of fraud

The Federal Communications Commission will vote this month on a proposal to offer $9.25 a month to qualifying low-income families to help them purchase Internet service. About 23 percent of all households in Hall County have no Internet connection. The plan is the latest evolution of the $2 billion federal Lifeline program, launched in 1985 to bring landline phone services to the rural poor.
