A man, his wife and their small son escaped an overnight fire in South Hall County, but their home sustained major damage, according to Hall County Fire Services.

Firefighters responded at about 2:45 a.m. to the doublewide mobile home in the 2600 block of Friendship Road.

The fire was extinguished and the Red Cross called to help the family.

The fire department reported that the man began cooking and fell asleep. He then woke up to the smell of smoke and tried to put out the fire. When that was unsuccessful he alerted his wife and son and they evacuated.

The home is unlivable.
