Several blocks in downtown Dawsonville were shut down Wednesday night while authorities investigated an explosive device found in a car parked at a gas station on Ga. 9 North.

Lt. Tony Wooten with the Dawson County Sheriff's Office said deputies discovered the device after store clerks at the Kangaroo convenience store reported a man in the car who appeared to have passed out at the wheel after pumping gas.

Emergency officials arrived and transported the Hall County man, whose name was not released, to an area hospital for treatment. His condition Thursday was not immediately available.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's bomb squad was called and took the device.

Investigators interviewed the man at the hospital and also searched his residence.

Wooten said the man had "no real reason" for having the device, which he described as an industrial grade explosive typically used on construction sites.

"It's believed he may have gotten the device from his work," Wooten said.

No other explosives were located at the home, Wooten said.

Charges have not been filed and Wooten said the investigation is ongoing.
