The state’s Environmental Protection Division fined the Gainesville Public Utilities Department for unpermitted discharges last year into Limestone Creek and Lake Lanier.

On Dec. 28, the EPD ordered the city utility to pay $3,000 for the sewage overflows with an order to correct the problems immediately, according to the EPD’s Web site.

A call to Public Utilities was not returned as of press time.
