DOT approves $16.3M contract for Ga. 13 widening at Hall-Gwinnett line

Another South Hall road widening project is in the works.

The Georgia Department of Transportation awarded a $16.3 million contract July 1 to E.R. Snell Contractor of Snellville to widen Atlanta Highway/Ga. 13 from Sawnee Avenue to Lanier Islands Parkway/Ga. 347.

The 1.7-mile project straddles Hall and Gwinnett counties and would run through Buford and Rest Haven.

When the project will begin wasn’t immediately known Wednesday, as DOT district spokeswoman Katie Strickland said, “The start dates are determined by the contractors.”

DOT District Engineer Brent Cook said at a DOT forum in March the four-lane project could start this fall.

The completion date is June 30, 2020.

The road would intersect with another large DOT project that has been split into several phases — the widening of Ga. 347 between Lanier Islands resort and Old Winder Highway/Ga. 211.

Work has been completed on Ga. 347 between McEver Road and Ga. 211, with the 8-mile, mostly six-lane segment between Interstate 985 and Ga. 211 officially completed June 30.

A future project would involve widening Ga. 347 between McEver and Lanier Islands.

On July 1, the DOT also awarded a $612,605 contract for sign and striping upgrades in Hall and Stephens counties; and $449,347 for guardrail replacements in Hall and Gwinnett counties.

Other details about those projects weren’t available.
