Beginning today, Dick’s Sporting Goods is open for business.

Under construction since spring, the newest addition to Gainesville’s Lakeshore Mall was built in the space between J.C. Penney and Sears.

A ribbon cutting and special shopping preview were held Tuesday evening for family and friends of store employees, as well as invited community members.

“I love it,” said Angie Ledbetter as she walked through the 50,000-square-foot store. “They have a lot to offer.”

The sporting goods store offers several name brands, including Nike, Under Armour and The North Face.

“We’ve got tennis, we have running, we do lots of team sports,” said Jennifer Evans, community marketing manager with Dick’s Sporting Goods. “We do lots of team sports, so for example all of the football, baseball, soccer teams ... we’ll have the equipment that all the youth teams will need.”

She added there are items for hunting and fishing, as well.

“I think this is going to be huge,” Sheryl Chester said while shopping for golf attire. “It’s been a long time coming for the Gainesville area to have a sporting goods store.”

Chester’s family is very athletic, she said.

“We have to drive to, you know, Gwinnett or Buford every time we need something,” she said. “We have been waiting for something like a Dick’s to open here.”

Mayor Pro Tem Bob Hamrick said he believes the store will do well.

“They tell me this is the 17th store in Georgia,” he said, “and I told them, without being the least bit facetious, that this store will outperform the other 16 in the state.

“We do welcome you to our city,” Hamrick added. “We know you will have a great success here.”

Evans said the store is now open to the public, with grand-opening events taking place this weekend.

Friday and Saturday hours will be extended, beginning at 8 a.m. and closing at 10 p.m.

Former Atlanta Braves player Dale Murphy will sign autographs from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday. People who want an autograph will need to be one of the first 350 in the store that morning. Wristbands for autographs will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.

The first 100 adults in line Friday and Saturday will receive a mystery gift card for Dick’s, valued from $5 to $500.

Also Saturday, the first 100 people will receive Under Armour Tech T-shirts.

Extended Sunday hours are 9 a.m.-8 p.m. The first 100 adults in the store that day will get a scratch-and-win card.
