A preliminary investigation by Hall County Fire Services shows that a deck that collapsed late Sunday at 6585 Tara Trail in Lula, injuring two people, wasn’t secured properly to the home.
"Nails were used to fasten the deck to the mobile home," said Capt. Scott Cagle, Hall County’s fire marshal, on Monday.
The theory is that over time "these nails worked their way out and the deck and its makeshift ceiling collapsed," Cagle said.
The deck had been placed 6 to 8 feet above ground. The two injured people were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where they were treated for minor injuries. Cagle said he could not release the names of those injured.
Lula is looking into whether the home’s occupants obtained a permit before building the covered deck, Cagle said. City Manager Dennis Bergin couldn’t be reached for comment.
