Arts Council banquet honors leaders, benefactor

The Arts Council bestowed awards and passed the baton to a new president at its annual membership meeting and awards luncheon Wednesday.

Incoming president Kirk Watkins, elected for the upcoming fiscal year, will take the helm in July. Outgoing president John Vardeman was recognized for his leadership the last two years.

Also attending was Lessie Smithgall, who founded The Arts Council in 1970. Smithgall, 105, and her late husband Charles Smithgall, founders of The Times and community philanthropists, were recognized for their lifetime commitment to The Arts Council.

The recipient of the Jane Eve Wilheit Friends of the Arts Award was Jack Frost and Memorial Park Funeral Homes and Cemeteries.

Entertainment was provided by pianist Jeff Fricks and young vocalists Cadyn Lexa and Brooke Blackwell.
