A Clayton man is in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta after a Tuesday morning wreck at the intersection of Ga. 365 and Howard Road in Gainesville.Michael Hermansen was airlifted from the scene. His mother, Anna Hermansen, also of Clayton, was a passenger and was pronounced dead Tuesday after being transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. The Hermansens were heading south on Ga. 365 in a 2006 maroon Kia Sorento when a green 2000 Toyota Corolla, driven by Martha Chatman of Lula, attempted to cross Ga. 365 from the RaceTrac gas station on Howard Road, said Cpl. Joe Britte, a spokesman for the Gainesville Police Department. The Toyota struck the rear driver’s side of the Sorento. The collision caused the Kia to overturn and flip several times, finally colliding with a guardrail.Officials originally thought Anna Hermansen was ejected.“On further investigation, all occupants were properly restrained,” Britte said.Michael Hermansen meanwhile was trapped in the car until rescued by first responders, who included personnel from the Gainesville Fire Department and Hall County Fire Services.Chatman was not injured. The Gainesville Police Traffic Service Unit is investigating.
