GAINESVILLE — The Gainesville City Board of Education plans to talk Monday about its calendars for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years.

Shirley Whitaker, assistant superintendent, is set to seek the board’s approval for the 2008-09 calendar and present a draft of the 2009-10 calendar.

Also on the agenda: discussion of a charter system application the district plans to file with the state, the agenda for a Jan. 12 school board retreat and approval of distributing sex education brochures at Gainesville High School.

School officials also plan to discuss a wellness plan for district employees and a promotion and retention policy.

The regular monthly meeting, which is set to start at 7 p.m. at the district’s main offices at 508 Oak St., is the last one for board members Frank Harben and Lee Highsmith.

Both are leaving the board after opting not to seek re-election this year. Highsmith has served as chairwoman the past two years.

Political newcomers Sammy Smith and Maria Calkins will be sworn in to the board on Jan. 1.
