Jason Thibeault has been an employee of the U.S. Postal Service for more than a decade now, and he says this year is the busiest he’s ever seen it.
As a supervisor at the Green Street facility in Gainesville, he said the packages keep piling up.
“Christmastime is always busy, but it’s been insane this year,” Thibeault said.
It’s not just busy in Gainesville. The Postal Service planned to deliver more than 30 million packages across the United States on Monday, which was considered the busiest delivery day of the year.
“We’re seeing 15 percent growth in package volume over last year,” said Postmaster General and CEO Megan J. Brennan. “This shows customers are increasingly counting on the Postal Service to deliver the holidays.”
Brennan said the organization remains on track to meet projections of more than 15 billion total pieces of mail and packages to be delivered by New Year’s Eve.
The Postal Service has taken steps to prepare its network for peak season and ensure the timely delivery of mail and packages, including increasing surface and air transportation capacities, adding new package sorting equipment and further developing routing options to increase efficiency.
Since Nov. 29, the Postal Service has delivered packages seven days a week in major cities and high-volume areas.
Additionally, the Postal Service plans to deliver last-minute packages on Christmas Day in some areas around the country.
Christina Barnes of Gainesville stood in line at the Green Street post office this week, penning some last-minute Christmas cards as she waited.
She said the local office is “great. They have good service here.”
Barnes added that it was her third time in the past several days visiting the location.
“I think this time I’ve finally got everything in the mail. I’m done after this,” she said, laughing.
Thibeault said he and co-workers there will keep doing what they do.
“It’s busier than I can remember, but this is what we do,” he said. “We get it done.”
