Chestatee High School track coach Stacey Merck was struck by a vehicle as she was running with some students Sunday morning.

Merck was in Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta Monday awaiting a date for surgery for facial injuries, Principal Suzanne Jarrard said.

Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident, which occurred about 7:35 a.m. near the intersection of Chestatee Road and Lullwater Trail.  Other details from GSP were not available Monday morning.

Jarrard said some cross country and track team members were running with Merck. No one else was injured.

Hall County Fire Services responded to the accident and took Merck to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Capt. Zachary Brackett said by email.

Merck is a physical education teacher at Chestatee Academy. She also has been a special education and English teacher at Chestatee High School.

She is the head girls track coach at Chestatee, according to her teacher website.

Her husband, Daniel Merck, is the band director at Chestatee High School.

She is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education and a minor in English. She also has taught and coached at Davis Middle School.
